Campbell Scientific CR1000Xe – High-Performance Datalogger

The Campbell Scientific CR1000Xe is a high-performance measurement, data acquisition, processing, and control datalogger. Its accuracy, reliability, and rugged construction make it suitable for complex monitoring systems, multichannel measurements, and long-term operation at remote sites.

The CR1000Xe can measure analog and digital sensors, thermocouples, current-loop signals, pulse and frequency signals, SDI-12 devices, and intelligent sensors using RS-232, RS-422, or RS-485 communication. It processes and stores measurements, performs automated control functions, and transfers data through Ethernet, cellular, Wi-Fi, radio, or satellite communication systems.

The CR1000Xe replaces the CR1000X while retaining compatibility with existing CR1000X programs. The new model provides USB-C, a wide 10 to 36 VDC input range, regulated 12 V outputs, more flexible RS-232 and RS-485 communication, and enhanced Ethernet-port protection.

Measurement Inputs and Control

The CR1000Xe provides 16 universal analog inputs that can be individually configured as 16 single-ended or 8 differential channels. They support voltage, thermocouple, RTD, thermistor, resistance-bridge, current-loop, and period-average measurements.

The dedicated RG1 and RG2 inputs allow direct measurement of current-loop signals, including 0–20 mA and 4–20 mA outputs. Four VX terminals provide programmable voltage excitation and can also supply switched, regulated 3.3 or 5 VDC power to digital sensors.

In addition to measurement, the datalogger can control relays, alarms, pumps, valves, heaters, and other external systems using its digital and switched-power outputs.

Serial Interfaces and Smart Sensors

The C1–C8 terminals can be configured for digital input and output, pulse counting, PWM, interrupts, timer measurements, and communication using RS-232, RS-422, RS-485, SDI-12, SDM, I2C, or SPI.

The CR1000Xe supports up to four independent half-duplex RS-485 connections or two full-duplex RS-422/RS-485 connections. Four independent SDI-12 terminals provide flexible connection of multiple smart sensors.

Ethernet, USB-C, and Remote Access

The integrated 10/100 Ethernet port allows direct connection to a local network, industrial router, or internet gateway. An embedded web interface provides browser-based access to system status, data, and settings.

Supported protocols and services include IPv4, IPv6, TCP, UDP, TLS, HTTP and HTTPS, FTP and FTPS, SFTP, SMTP/TLS, NTP, MQTT, SNMPv3, PakBus, Modbus, DNP3, and NMEA 0183.

The USB-C port is used for configuration, program transfer, data collection, and local computer communication. When the datalogger is powered only by USB, some power outputs and the CS I/O port are not operational.

CPI and System Expansion

The integrated CPI interface supports Campbell Scientific high-speed sensors and distributed measurement peripherals, including CDM and GRANITE modules. A CPI network can contain up to 20 devices and can cover a total cable length of up to 610 m depending on its speed and configuration.

The CR1000Xe is compatible with Campbell Scientific multiplexers, vibrating-wire interfaces, terminal input modules, and relays.

Power

The CR1000Xe can operate in nominal 12 or 24 VDC systems because of its wide 10 to 36 VDC power-input range. It provides a regulated 12 V output and two programmable SW12V outputs for powering sensors, modems, and other peripherals.

CS I/O power can be switched under program or user control, helping to reduce energy consumption in autonomous battery- and solar-powered stations.
