Campbell Scientific CELL215 – 4G LTE Cellular Module

The Campbell Scientific CELL215 is an industrial 4G LTE CAT-1 cellular module designed for remote communication with data loggers and automated monitoring stations. It features RS-232, CS I/O and USB interfaces, low power consumption and support for 3G and 2G fallback networks.

The CELL215 provides reliable remote access to the monitoring system without requiring an on-site visit. It allows users to collect and review measurement data, check the status of the monitoring station, modify the data logger configuration, and perform remote diagnostics.

The module features RS-232 and CS I/O communication ports for connection to Campbell Scientific data loggers, as well as a USB interface for configuration. It supports serial server, serial client, and PPP host modes. Once an internet connection is established, the data logger can communicate with Campbell Scientific software, server and cloud-based systems, and through protocols and services such as Modbus, DNP3, email, and HTTP.

Key Benefits

  • 4G LTE CAT-1 cellular communication;
  • automatic fallback to 3G or 2G networks;
  • remote data collection and system management;
  • RS-232, CS I/O, and USB communication interfaces;
  • easy integration with Campbell Scientific data loggers;
  • low power consumption;
  • suitable for solar-powered and autonomous monitoring stations;
  • support for primary and diversity antennas;
  • no moving parts and minimal maintenance requirements;
  • support for secure communication through the Konect Routing Service.

The CELL215 has particularly low power consumption—approximately 14 mA in standby mode, 39 mA during active communication, and 300 µA in low-power mode. This makes it suitable for remote monitoring systems powered by a battery and solar panel.

Applications

The CELL215 is suitable for remote monitoring of:

  • geotechnical and structural sites;
  • landslides, dams, bridges, and infrastructure facilities;
  • meteorological and agrometeorological stations;
  • water resources and hydrological systems;
  • agricultural and environmental sites;
  • energy and photovoltaic installations;
  • remote sensor and measurement stations.

SIM Card, Power Supply, and Antenna

The CELL215 requires a 3FF micro-SIM card and a suitable cellular data plan. The SIM card is normally provided by the selected mobile network operator and is not included in the standard delivery unless the device is supplied preconfigured with a Campbell Scientific cellular service.

The module operates from a nominal 12 or 24 V DC power supply. It features two SMA connectors for primary and diversity antennas, although it can also operate using only a primary cellular antenna.

Compatibility

The CELL215 can be used with current Campbell Scientific data loggers, including the CR300, CR310, CR6, and CR1000X, as well as a range of older models through a suitable serial or CS I/O cable. The exact connection method depends on the data logger model and the selected communication mode.
